A 14-year-old girl has died after trying to rescue a dog in a retention pond in north Edmonton, a family friend confirms to CTV News.
Khrystyna Maksymova was walking the neighbour’s dog with her younger sister before she died, a family friend told CTV Edmonton. When the dog got off-leash, Maksymova went after it.
Although the 14-year-old is said to be a good swimmer, she is believed to have gotten stuck in weeds and mud while trying to reach the dog.
Fire officials add area residents tried to help the girl but were unsuccessful.
