Kindersley was well represented at the 2017 Canada Bowl National Championships as one of our home teams placed 4th last weekend.
Competing in the 5pin Championship, the Kindersley team represented the whole of Saskatchewan, while 7 other teams represented British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, Newfoundland, and Ontario.
“Considering we are talking nationals, our team was happy with our standing.” Team member Murray Gilles noted that many of the games were very close.
The hefty playing schedule started bright and early on Saturday, July 8, and ended with a Step-Ladder competition Sunday night. “Saturday was a tough day for us, actually placing us on the last standing,” Gilles recalled. The team fared much better on Sunday, as clean shots propelled the team to its final 4th standing.
The weekend certainly had its highlights, one, in particular, was when team member Eric Serfas broke a pin during one of his strikes. “I had never seen that before,” laughed Gilles, “His bowling ball must have hit the pin just right to take the entire top off.”
Serfas gets to keep the broken pin as a memoir, as the judges humorously turned the pin into a trophy, presenting it to him as a “broken pin award”.
In all, Saskatchewan, and most particularly Kindersley, had a great chance to hold its head high that weekend. Gilles summed it up when he said: “It was an experience Kindersley plans to have again, we will continue to work hard and play hard, maybe next year we will have even better results.”
