Golfer Connor Tate again put Kindersley on the map as he finished top of his age group at the Junior Worlds Qualifier in Carstairs, Alberta. Held by the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, the Worlds Qualifier took place over the May 13-14 weekend.
17-year-old Tate completed the tournament with five over par and a score of 149 overall, making this tournament a win for the second year straight. “It felt good to go back to back like that,” noted Tate. “It also was great to see how the hard work over the winter paid off.”
The weather proved to be a challenge as bright sunshine would suddenly turn to hail and strong winds. “It was like someone flipped a switch,” commented Tate, “but it was a good challenge, it set us all back at first, but then made us work harder in the end.”
It seems Tate thrives on a challenge. Traveling to Swift Current every 1½ – 2 weeks, the teen doesn’t let the winter weather stop him from doing his best. Fortunately, Tate’s coach, Jeff Chambers, recently built a new indoor facility at the Elmwood Golf and Country Club, and Tate made good use of it throughout the snowy season.
Looking forward, Tate has nearly every weekend full this summer as he pushes his limit in various tournaments in western Canada. Some of these tournaments help to qualify golf players for the Winnipeg Canada Games on August 8 – 12. Tate noted that only 4 golfers in Saskatchewan will be chosen. “Hopefully I will be one of those four.”
Graduating from Kindersley Composite School this spring, Tate has already found the University of his choice. Ranking 11th in America in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) division for golf, the Arizona Christian University located in Phoenix, Arizona, also had its home golf team, Firestorm, make it to Nationals this year. By August, Tate plans to become a part of this prestigious program.
