Kindersley Fire Holds Mock Scenario

Hello, Cody Phinney back for another update from the Kindersley Fire Brigade.

Recently the KFD held another mock scenario involving a structure possibly “on fire” with potential entrapment. None of the responding members knew that this was a mock scenario, it was all set up to ensure it was as believable as possible. Using a structure kindly provided to us by a retired KFD member, we simulated smoke from a fire using fog machines and a small wood fire which helped create a believable appearance and smell of a structure fire. One of our members was stashed somewhere inside and needed to be rescued by our entry teams. Our members used forcible entry and search and rescue techniques to locate the entrapped victim successfully. It was a very successful training exercise!

This recent cold snap has been a harsh reminder of some of the temperatures that can be thrown our way. The intense cold can be extremely hazardous and hard on services and equipment. When temperatures dip this low its important to keep an eye on your furnace exhaust. If the exhaust ices over, they can easily cause carbon monoxide to backfill into your home. Carbon monoxide is an odourless and colourless gas that can quickly cause serious symptoms ranging from headaches, nausea, loss of muscle control and brain damage. There should always be smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors located near your furnace as an early warning system in case of any problems. If your carbon monoxide detectors go off you should immediately ensure everyone in the house evacuates and call 9-1-1.
