Beaver Moon, Snow Moon, Freezing Moon Will be Visible Tonight

On Sunday night, we’re in for the last Full Moon show of Fall 2023. It’s hitting its peak at 4:17 a.m. EST on Monday, November 27, but will be shining bright from Sunday morning to Tuesday morning. Plenty of time to enjoy the view!

Every Full Moon during the year has a name given by the various Farmers Almanacs.

Most of these names were adopted from the lunar calendars invented and used by the First Nations peoples that lived in what is now the northeastern United States. Others, like the Harvest Moon and Hunter’s Moon, reference Colonial American or European folklore.

According to timeanddate.com, “The Full Moon for November is named after beavers because, at this time, they become particularly active in building their winter dams in preparation for the cold season. The beaver is mainly nocturnal, so they work under the light of the Full Moon.”

Pagan traditions call this one the Mourning Moon. Why? It’s the last Full Moon before the December solstice in 2023, therefore it’s a time for looking back on the year, taking a breather, and letting go of the past.

Other names for the Beaver moon include Frost Moon, Freezing Moon, Trading Moon, and Snow Moon.

So, whether you’re into stargazing or just enjoy a good story behind the moon names, the Full Beaver Moon is your cue to look up and enjoy the cosmic show.
