Province Providing $2.5 Million for Construction-Related Pre-Apprenticeship Training

The Government of Saskatchewan has announced its commitment to supporting skilled trades training by investing $2.5 million into pre-apprenticeship training programs. This funding will facilitate the expansion of over 200 additional pre-apprenticeship skills training seats in construction-related trades.

As the province experiences economic growth, increased population, and job opportunities, it is essential to develop a skilled and adaptable trades workforce to meet the demands of this growth.

The seat increase will primarily focus on approximately 20 construction-related trades, including electrical work, carpentry, plumbing, welding, construction trades laborers, and heavy equipment operation. These programs are currently offered by regional colleges, Dumont Technical Institute, and the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies.

While Saskatchewan’s post-secondary trades training system is currently meeting the demand for replacing workers in the construction sector, additional investments are required to keep pace with the numerous infrastructure projects happening across the province. The newly allocated funding will be provided to training institutions throughout Saskatchewan, ensuring that learners have access to these programs and can embark on a career in the skilled trades.

The Government of Saskatchewan remains committed to offering programs, services, and innovations to job seekers and employers, aligning with the province’s Growth Plan goals of achieving a population of 1.4 million people and creating 100,000 new jobs by 2030. By collaborating with employers and job seekers, the government aims to recruit, train, and retain a qualified labor force to support Saskatchewan’s expanding economy.
