Ten Reasons Why I Don’t Like Pandemics!

By Ron Baker

First off, they kill people. People I love. People I know about. People who don’t deserve to die. People.

Second, they stop normal. Businesses close. Family meals become restricted. Hospitality is not exhibited. Normal dies.

Third, they aren’t predictable. In late winter, we were just going to be two weeks – this was just a controllable health concern. 10 months later we are still waiting for the two weeks to end.

Fourth, they cause media to become inconsequential. The news cycle gets consumed. I don’t hear about the good side. I don’t hear about the usual seasonal highlights. I don’t even hear about major human interest stories outside the reach of the pandemic.

Fifth, they get written up in history books. At least the worst of the worst. At least the story of the unusual. And the average citizen becomes lost in the sensational.

Sixth, they highlight division. An election that was polarizing now becomes weaponized. Restrictions to protect people now divide people. Extreme circumstances tend to breed extreme reactions.

Seventh, they cause people to seek a cure. As if a cure will change divisions. As if a cure will cause a revival of trust. As if a cure will right a world that is upside down. When the focus is only on living we do not address what is killing our society.

Eighth, they stress the already stressed. The proverbial “straw” that broke the camel’s back is tossed about freely. Mental health issues and suicides rise. What once was a concern is now a true worry.

Ninth, they breed on forgetfulness. Generosity towards others is forgotten. Gratitude is unexpressed. When we chose to forget we also chose to isolate ourselves from others.

Tenth, they aren’t fun. We don’t laugh enough. We don’t look for the bright side of life. Without intention towards happiness and joy, we end up with despair, loneliness and heart sickness.

If I were to turn this pandemic upside down? I would love on others, serve the needy, thank the helpers, breed generosity and remember that God knows what is going on.
