Sun West Colony Schools Excel in SHEA Competitions

Every year the Saskatchewan Hutterian Educators Association (SHEA) holds a number of competitions that all colony students within the province can enter. These competitions are in the categories of art, penmanship, creative writing and poetry with students with awards presented to students for the best three in each Grade, Kindergarten to Grade 9, in each category.

Students at many of Sun West’s colony schools did very well in these competitions. Schools where awards were received included: Springfield Colony, Cherry Grove School at the Loreburn Colony, McGee Colony, Sovereign Colony, Kyle Colony, Eatonia Colony, Glidden Colony, Clear Spring Colony, Milden Colony and Matador Colony.

Students from Cherry Grove School at the Loreburn Colony were among the winners in these categories:

For art: Marvin Wurtz, Gr. 2, first place; Carlene Entz, Gr. 5, second place;; Adrian Wurtz, Gr. 5, third; Laura Entz, Gr. 6, third; Tanya Entz, Gr. 6, first.

For penmanship: Carlene Entz, Gr. 5, third; Tanya Entz, Gr. 6, second.

For creative writing: Waylon Entz, Gr. 1, first; Marvin Wurtz, Gr. 2, first; Reanna Entz, Gr. 3, second; ; Tanya Entz, Gr. 6, third; Darren Entz, Gr. 7, second; Janet Entz, Gr. 7, third.

For poetry: Carlene Entz, Gr. 5, first; Laura Entz, Gr. 6, second.

In the art competition, students were asked to create exact replicas of Georgia O’Keefe’s flower paintings. Below you see the Cherry Grove winners holding up the original and their own interpretation.

Sun West Director of Education Vicki Moore commented: “We are very proud of all the achievements of our Colony students. They are very talented and work very hard.”
