April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, bringing with it the opportunity to increase awareness and offer support to more than 100,000 Canadians living with Parkinson’s and the 30 more diagnosed every day which is why ongoing research remains vital.

Parkinson’s is a long-term neurologic disorder where the central nervous system degenerates and that affects the motor systems like trembling, stiffness, and rigidity. A diagnosis of Parkinson’s can take time. A family doctor might notice it first. You may be referred to a neurologist–a specialist who deals with Parkinson’s. There are no x-rays or tests to confirm Parkinson’s. So the neurologist will check your medical history, do a careful physical examination and certain tests, and rule out other conditions which may resemble Parkinson’s. Currently, there is no cure. You can live with Parkinson’s for years. The symptoms are treated with medication. Some people with Parkinson’s may benefit from surgery—though everyone’s journey is different.

In Kindersley, the local support group is committed to providing support, education, advocacy and guidance to anyone touched by Parkinson’s.

If you have Parkinson’s, know someone that has or just want information, the local Support Group meets the second Wednesday of the month. For more information, call Nancy @ 306-463-4514. Bring a friend and join them!
