Kindersley’s Property Taxes Are Decreasing by 10%
The Kindersley Town Council held its regular meeting on Monday, May 11th, 2020. During the evening, the 2020 budget was passed and as a result, residents will see property taxes decrease by approximately 10%.
The decision was made by the Council after an in-depth review and in response to the current economic climate in our community. “We worked long and hard on this budget, and I’m very glad to be able to tell the taxpayers of Kindersley that their taxes will be approximately 10% less this year,” said Mayor Rod Perkins. “We take a lot of pride in the fact that in the past three years, we did not increase taxes.” The reduction will mean a savings of approximately $150 to 500 dollars, depending on the value of the house.
“With the economy we’re living in right now in both oil and COVID-19 we felt it was time to pay back to our taxpayers, which we hope will be met with everyone’s approval,” said Mayor Rod Perkins.
Even with the tax decrease, the Town of Kindersley is projecting a surplus of $320,756.
“When we were first elected, one of our goals was to cut overhead and streamline things,” Mayor Perkins said. “Over the past 3.5 years, I believe we’ve cut about $650,000 in wages and benefits. When we built the pool two years ago, we anticipated having to borrow 3.5 million, but we rolled back a million dollars of that. In 2019, we built the fire hall and were able to do that with no external borrowing.”
Council has also resolved to direct administration to distribute approved funding to the following applicants to the Community Grant Program, 2020 Spring intake:
1. West Central Abilities $750.00
2. Kindersley & District Library $750.00
3. KCS SLC $373.08
4. Kindersley Antique Threshing Club $750.00,
for a total allocation amount of $2623.08.
Please note the reason any group that did not receive the grant is due to the event being cancelled due to the current COVID-19 situation. Unused funds from this intake have been allocated to the fall intake.
