Apart from wanting to be a Paleontologist and Equestrian when she grows up, Madison Wilson’s current dream is to get multicultural crayons and books into California classrooms — and so far she is succeeding.
Wilson, just age 7, wants to make sure that her fellow students see themselves reflected in their classrooms, so she has been busy raising money to donate diverse materials to three different schools within her home state.
After learning that Crayola will be releasing a 24-pack of multicultural crayons called ‘Colors of the World’ in July, Wilson asked her mom if she could raise funds to donate these crayons to her school, saying she wanted children of all colors to be able to accurately draw themselves.
So far, through GoFundMe, the third-grader has raised more than US$14,500 for her cause and is very close to hitting her target of $17,500. Her goal is to donate 1,000 crayon boxes and 500 books, and for every $2,500 she raises, she’ll donate 15 books and 25 boxes of crayons to different classrooms.
“Sometimes, there are only books with peach kids, and there should be books with brown kids like me, too,” her GoFundMe page, called “Help Fill Madi’s Treasure Box,” reads.
