Chamber Looks Ahead Despite Goose Fest Cancellation
By Mallorie Rast
As the Kindersley area continues to adjust in the face of COVID-19, some things, including Kindersley’s 48th Annual Goose Festival, had to give.
Recently, the Kindersley Chamber of Commerce announced there will be no Goose Festival activities planned and that the event is officially cancelled until 2021. Still, the Chamber is holding on to an optimistic future, knowing that our sturdy community will continue to weather the storm.
“Some of our members have already stated that a cancellation now could mean a better one for 2021,” said Kevin Martin, Executive Director of the Kindersley Chamber of Commerce.
The decision to cancel Goose Festival came as late as possible, and only after the Chamber had reached out via email to their members and other businesses in Kindersley, gauging interest for one of the main attractions, the Goose Festival Parade.
As the feedback came in, Martin says that not one of the businesses were in favour of the parade. As the chamber is only responsible for arranging the parade, the decision to cancel the event came after businesses added they were also not interested in hosting or contributing to other attractions that normally mark the fall festival. Martian says the businesses cited the posed risks to their businesses and employees as reasons for not participating in the weekend events.
Despite the disappointment of the cancelled event, the Chamber looks ahead to both the rest of 2020 and into 2021. One of the events the Chamber is currently looking to still host this year is a Job Fair. “There are many businesses who are looking for employees and there are talented and capable people who can be matched with the right job.” Martian says the Job Fair may take place instead of the Trade Show which was waning in interest this year. One of the main purposes of the Job Fair is to bring public awareness to the different trades and employment opportunities our community has to offer. “People can be excited about finding a job that is a fit for their career needs and personal goals.” The Chamber is still working through the details of offering the event given the current gathering restrictions and hopes to release more information as it becomes available.
