It’s That Time of Year Again, It’s Movember!
It’s November, and what does that mean… Movember, the time of year when men grow out their mustaches in support of and to raise awareness surrounding men’s health issues.
Movember is the only global charity focused solely on men’s health, with the foundation raising funds to deliver innovative, breakthrough research and support programs that enable men to live happier, healthier, and longer lives.
The idea of Movember started in Australia in 2003 when two friends joked about bringing the mustache back into fashion. Inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to take their idea of growing out a mustache one step further and use their idea to campaign about men’s health and prostate cancer. The two friends then sent out an email explaining the challenge and the rules (which are still in place today ) and that it would be $10 to participate–they found 30 men willing to grow out their mustaches. The next year, things really took off and they raised AUD $54,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA)!
Over the next 15 years, Movember has gradually become a global phenomenon. There are now official campaigns in 21 countries and more than AUD 730 million dollars has been raised to fund over 1,000 men’s health programs with focus on four key men’s health issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.
Today, The Movember Project draws international participants from America, Europe, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, China, and more.
Over the years, the fundraising options have become increasingly creative, but one thing is certain: Movember is an incredible way to break the silence and stigma surrounding men’s health on a global scale.
