Obituaries: Bert Olfert
July 12, 1950 ~ May 25, 2020 (age 69)
Bert Olfert was born in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan to the late Henry & Susan (nee Wiebe) Olfert on July 12th, 1950.
He is survived by his wife Gerri, children: Christie (Dusten), Aaron, Grandchildren: Cierra, Makenzie, Rylee, Ashlyn, Aidan, Nevaeh, Kyran, Emersyn Mother: Susan, sister: Leona (Norm) Huebert. In-laws: Vern Schiebelbein (Barb), Bernadette (Barry) Stubbington, Marian (Randy) Chotowetz, Joan (Wayne) Sieben, Maynard (Deb) Schiebelbein and numerous nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his father Henry in 2004
Bert started his life on a farm near Luseland and in 1964, moved into town. On October 6,1973, he married Gerri Schiebelbein, 6 years to the day they met. They began their life in Major, raising their children, Christie and Aaron. in the Fall of 1989, they moved to Luseland, where he took over as Luseland town foreman, following in his Dad’s footsteps, where he worked until health issues forced him to retire in 2015.
Over the years he worked at several jobs which included: driving bus for the Kerrobert School Division, worked for CPR, drove charter bus, worked for Richelhoff farms, and looked after Major’s water plant.
He was a Member of the Major & Luseland Fire Departments, Kinsmen Club of Luseland and The Luseland Wildlife
Music was a big part of his life, being in many bands, such as, ‘The Original Hare’, ‘Abe & the Lincolns’ and a family band, ‘Moonshine County’. He was always the entertainer, and will always be remembered for his rendition of Suzie Q.
He enjoyed sports especially hockey where over the years he played goalie for the Kerrobert Tigers and Luseland Mallards and later on announced the play by plays for the Mallards and became known as the ‘Voice of the Mallards.’ He was also a passionate Calgary Flames fan. He also enjoyed going to coffee row to BS (as he put it), and in his spare time, looked forward to helping with the harvest for the Kloster and Frick farms (he was always a farm boy at heart). For a number of years he did the Fireworks for Canada Day.
He loved hunting, fishing, camping at Loon Lake & in later years spending winter holidays in Mexico. In the last years when he was housebound, TV was his main form of entertainment, mainly watching sports and the Food channel. I know he wouldn’t want anyone to know, (but I finally get the last word) he couldn’t understand how anyone could watch such garbage like the soap, ‘The Young and The Restless’, it didn’t take too long before he began watching it faithfully.
Bert started to have health issues for the last fifteen years, but always managed to pull through. It was said that he had ‘9 lives’, but finally the fight just got to be too much. He can now breathe easy.
He regretted not being able to spend more time with his grandchildren, due to his health issues, but loved them dearly.
We would like to thank Dr. Wentzel and the hospital Staff of the Kerrobert and District Health Center for the care Bert received over the past few years: Homecare, especially Deanne Campbell; EMS, Jody & Jenna and Dr. Williams & Nurses at the Unity and District Health Centre and St. Paul’s Hospital Staff for keeping him comfortable in his last hours.

I’m sure coffee row & Your town will be a lil’ quieter too.
The Flames will now burn less bright on Saturday nights when they take the ice.
…and no one, will be able to do Suzie Q the way you do!

Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 6 for the immediate family with Father Dan Yasinski officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bert’s memory may be made to the Luseland Swiming Pool, C/O the Luseland Credit Union.
