KFD Social Club Host Chili Cook-off

BY KINDERSLEY FIRE

Hello, Cody Phinney back for another update from the Kindersley Fire Brigade.

The Kindersley Fire Social Club hosted a chili cook-off and Super Bowl watch party for our members and their families on February 12th. The Social Club plans several small events throughout the year as an opportunity for fire families to get together and relax. This particular event saw six cooks competing for the coveted Chili Trophy. The competition was fierce, but we could only have one winner. Once the votes were tallied up it was revealed that Josh Goetz had come out on top.

The weekend of February 25th and 26th saw many of our members, and some from other departments, take on their ICS 200 course. Incident Command Systems (ICS for short) 200 course is the second of four total levels of certifications regarding command and management of emergency scenes. The ICS certifications are standardized and used all across North America by law enforcement, fire, and many other government and non-government organizations. All members of the KFD are required to obtain their ICS 100 awareness certification, which allows them to be integrated into an emergency operation. The ICS 200 course certifies personnel to be able to assume command of an emergency operation under the ICS system. Congratulations to all members who passed the training.

Did you know that over half of fires in the home start on the stovetop? With most stovetop fires happening while frying. While cooking it is best practice to always stay in the kitchen and supervise your food. A kitchen fire can happen in a flash. If a stovetop or grease fire does occur, put a lid on over the fire and remove the cookware from heat. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled and call the fire department and evacuate the house if it does not go out. Do not put water on a grease fire. Removing access to oxygen is the safest method.
