Royal Saskatchewan Museum Hosts Virtual Activities

As the temperature drops and we approach the Winter Solstice, there is science, stories and plenty of fun at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM).

“The best part is staying safe and not having to venture out on cold and blustery days as museum programmers are offering a range of at-home, on-line entertainment for RSM fans of all ages,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross said. “As winter and the holidays draw near, even if you chose to stay bundled up at home, there is something for everyone when you visit the Royal Saskatchewan Museum.”

RSM staff are encouraging families to re-discover the great content available on the Royal Saskatchewan Museum YouTube channel.

New videos being added in December:

The Winter Solstice with Joely Big Eagle-Kequahtooway.
A virtual tour of the museum’s Paleo Lab where viewers can get behind the scenes where scientists are working on a 70-million-year-old fossil plesiosaur from Saskatchewan’s ancient sea.
Orange Shirt Day Programming which includes Life Speaker Tim Poitras of Muscowpetung First Nation in conversation with Brad Bellegarde aka InfoRed sharing residential school experiences and a performance of the song “I Remember”.

Families can download the GuidiGO app and take a tour of the gallery from the comfort of their home, featuring Scotty, the World’s Largest T. rex and 65-million-year resident of Saskatchewan. Please visit https://bit.ly/ScottyVirtualTour.

Staff Picks:

Educate

Brenda’s picks include “Under the Matrix”, a series that documents the process of preparing a fossil, or the “Making the Tipi” series which shares the steps and skills required to create the magnificent bison hide tipi in the Winter Camp Exhibit. Through Brenda’s picks, visitors can learn how the Indigenous people of Saskatchewan stayed warm and active through a long prairie winter.

Engage

Participants can view one of the mini tours of feature exhibits, for example a time-lapse of a frog life cycle or field camera footage featuring the “Best of Burrowing Owls”. There is also the option to check out the T.rex playlist on the YouTube channel called “T.rex Adventures” that contains several videos, including “A visit with Scotty the T.rex”.

Entertain

For those with children to entertain, The RSM recommends the “Creature Feature” series with Kaylee and Bubs, the Great Horned Owl. The “Storytime with Gail” series is full of stories about dinosaurs and animals and Aimee’s “Make Your Own Museum” is a great video that will inspire kids to build their own museum and stay occupied for hours!
