Farming Company Charged with Violating Two Counts Under OHS Regulations
On December 14th, 2020, Saskatchewan company K. Haeusler Farms Inc. plead guilty in Humboldt Provincial Court to violating two counts under The Occupational Health and Safety, (OHS) Regulations, 1996.
The company was charged with contravening the following OHS regulations:
subsection 8(1) of the regulations (being an employer, fail to give notice to the division as soon as reasonably possible of an accident at a place of employment that required a worker to be admitted to a hospital as an in-patient for a period of 72 hours or more); and
clause 3-8(a) of the regulations (being an employer, fail to ensure, insofar as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all the employer’s workers, resulting in the serious injury of a worker).
As a result of these charges, the company was fined $14,286, with a surcharge of $5,714, for a total of $20,000.
The charges stemmed from an incident that occurred on August 29, 2019, near Muenster, Saskatchewan. A worker became pinched between a skid shack and the bucket of a tracked hoe, resulting in serious injuries.
