Teepee Erected at Eaton School for Expansion of Progressive Learning

Eaton School, its staff, and students excel at expanding their knowledge outside classroom
walls. Evident in their ever-expanding outdoor learning space boasting greenhouses, outdoor
planters, and a covered learning area. Its newest addition a teepee, Students assisted Lydon
Linklater in erecting the teepee on school grounds, expanding the knowledge of students on the
history, heritage, and customs of the first nations people.

Linklater a knowledge keeper and storyteller who is the Indigenous Relations Advisor for
Remai Modern Art Museum in Saskatoon. He has an educational background in Indian Social
Relations work, Indian Studies and as well is the longest serving member of the Office of the Treaty
Commissioner’s Speakers.

Linklater finds joy in bringing awareness and enlightenment on Treaty and First Nation
worldviews, heritage and customs and delivers it in a fun and interactive way. Schools across
Canada are bringing in knowledgeable people to learn about the history of our country. The
erecting of the teepee Linklater says is a wonderful way to educate the students and the public
on our history.

The Eaton students, proud to be involved in helping erect the small teepee on school grounds,
excitedly played in and around it during recess. The smiles said everything about how learning
outside the walls of a classroom can open up an amazing opportunity to learn about the world
even outside their community in a hands-on way.

Linklater states “That activities like this help bring Canadians together from all walks of life in
understanding and working together. It’s a huge step in the Truth and Reconciliation process.”
Plans to expand on the new addition with a knowledge path and possibly some artwork on
the teepee to integrate it with ongoing learning activities for the students.
