What Exactly Is Crime Stoppers? The Kindersley RCMP Explain

Every week the Kindersley RCMP, with the assistance of the media, pass on stories of interest and crime reports to the pubic that are followed by a request that if anyone has any information and want to remain anonymous to contact Crime Stoppers. But what is Crime Stoppers?

Crime Stoppers is a civilian, non profit, charitable organization that brings together the police, the community and the media in the fight against crime. Contributions from individuals, corporations, clubs, professional associations, retailers and social groups all help to keep the program functioning, which are tax deductible.

Crime Stoppers has it origins in New Mexico after a university student was killed during a robbery in 1976. After 6 weeks of investigating the police had very few leads. Investigators at the time thought if the public was able to observe a re-enactment of the crime on television it may lead to a citizen providing information leading to an arrest. They were right. Within 72 hours of the re-enactment being aired the police had solved the crime. This was the start of Crime Stoppers which has since expanded to 1700 programs in 32 countries.

The offices are staffed by trained personnel who receive, process and pass on tip information to investigating officers. Those that choose to participate are given a code number for all future communication and never have to identify themselves. “These tips are extremely helpful in assisting the RCMP solve crime” says Staff Sergeant Kevin Peterson of the Kindersley Detachment. Crimes such as the recovery of stolen property, the seizure of illegal drugs or an arrest of someone on an outstanding warrant can all result in a cash reward.

On that note…if you need to report any suspicious activity in your community, please contact the Kindersley RCMP detachment by calling 306-462-4642 or their local police service. Information can also be provided anonymously through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers by calling 1800-222-TIPS (8477) or submitting a tip online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
