Easton Daae STARS Very Important Patient

Easton is a proud and tested hockey player who loves to help out on the farm, which is why he was taking a few shots on the net in the big shop before they got to work. On this day, Easton and his cousin were playing around together on their grandparents farm. As any farmer knows, the tires that are used on tractors and combines can weigh hundreds of pounds and should always be handled with care – the heaviest of all being up to 1300 pound sprayer tires. A miscommunication led to the boys playing in the shop, not realizing these sprayer tires had been momentarily propped up waiting for transport. The worst accident happened when one of those behemoth tires tipped over directly onto Easton, completely crushing him down on the concrete floor. His cousin immediately ran for help and Easton’s two uncles were able to lift the tire enough to pull him to safety.

In the ambulance, the severity of the injuries as well as the risk of the unknowns surrounding Easton’s injuries convinced EMS that STARS needed to be called. However, both helicopters in service were on other missions at the time, so Easton was initially taken a local hospital. Physicians were concerned by the possible injuries to Easton’s brain and again requested STARS; a flight crew was routed to Easton’s location after the completion of the earlier missions.

Upon their arrival, STARS flight nurse Tammy Hagerty immediately alleviated Lauren’s greatest concerns.

“Tammy came straight to Daniel and I, looked us in the eye and said, ‘You know, I’m a mom, so I get it. You need to know that he’s okay, and I’m telling you right now he is okay. We are very happy with all of his results, how he’s checking out, and everything is looking really good,’” said Lauren. “She just wanted to put our minds at ease, and she was very professional and just great about it.”

After checking over Easton, STARS air medical crew could tell that while Easton’s injuries were serious, he was in a strong position. They helped relieve his pain and prepped him for transport to a trauma centre.

Upon his arrival, Easton was immediately assessed and began treatment for his injuries. He had broken his jaw, skull, and pelvis, but fortunately avoided any serious injuries to his brain.

Easton was able to be home within eight days, and he is now back to his active, happy normal self. Easton’s whole community was also incredibly thankful for his rescue.

“Our small community organized a little homecoming for him,” said Dan. “There were neighbours and friends lined up on the side of the road with balloons and banners, presents and smiles, just to wave to him coming home.”

For Dan and Lauren, these moments of positivity have been the greatest highlights of Easton’s recovery, especially as he’s resumed participating in the things he loves most, including hockey.

“When he started taking some steps with the walker, that felt like a big deal,” said Lauren.
