On January 27 at 4:00 p.m., West Prince RCMP responded to a report of human remains located in West Cape, and are not ruling out that the remains could be connected to a historical ship wreck burial from the 1800s.
According to the University of Prince Edward Island Archives, the majority of the shipbuilding activity in this area and most of the Island for that matter took place during the first half of the 1800’s. Prince Edward Island proved to be an ideal place for wooden shipbuilding with its abundance of timber including birch, beech, pine, spruce, maple and juniper. Most of the ships built around the West and North Rivers were schooners. There were also a few brigs, barques, and sloops, built as well.*
The Provincial Coroner’s office responded to the scene. Human remains have been located in this area in the 1950s and 1960s.
