Outlook Elementary School Class Receives Citizenship Award
A Grade 3 class at Outlook Elementary School received the Saskatchewan Public Schools Citizenship Award on Friday, June 4.
The award recognizes initiatives undertaken by public school student groups or classes that support citizenship or character building within their school and community.
“The class worked hard throughout the year, on many different activities connected to their Helping Others Project,” stated OES principal Darla Thorstad, “we are so proud of Miss Walzak and her Grade 3 class.”
The Grade 3 students raised money for several charitable causes. This included making donations to the Food Bank, the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, a Senior Santa Program and purchasing a goat for a family in need through the Salvation Army’s Gifts of Hope campaign. They decorated for a Christmas Light Show as a community fundraiser. They created reusable saran wrap to help the environment and one student raised money to buy coats and ski pants for students at OES. The video below talks about the many great ways that the students helped out in their community.
Tracey Walzak, the Grade 3 teacher stated: “So all of sudden all these projects started coming in and they were amazing. I was blown away! They really exceeded any of my expectations. Students were doing not only one thing on a list but they were doing multiple projects . . . This project spiraled totally out-of-control but in the best way possible and I am so proud of my students.”
Sun West Director of Education Randy Emmerson congratulated the Grade 3 class stating: “These incredible young people provided all of us with an inspiration that shows how much can be done to help others. Their leadership and example is something we can all learn from.”
