Renowned Canadian Writer, Journalist, Professor, and Broadcaster, Ted Barris Coming to Swift Current

The Write Out Loud organizing committee is delighted to announce a special date and time for a very special guest. Renowned Canadian writer, journalist, professor, and broadcaster, Ted Barris, joins us at the Swift Current Museum on Wednesday, July 19.

Barris’ latest book, Battle of the Atlantic – Gauntlet to Victory, (HarperCollins, 2022) explores Canada’s naval battle that, for six years, fought to protect convoys to Britain. Canada went from 13 warships in 1939 to 400 fighting ships by V-E Day in 1945, becoming the 4th largest navy in the world.

Battle of the Atlantic is his 13th book on Canada’s military history. Others include subjects such as medics in the line of fire, the Korean War, D-Day, Vimy Ridge, the Great Escape from a POW camp in Poland, and the secret raid on German hydro dams conducted by Canadian airmen. He uses oral histories, personal letters, and memoirs to paint personal stories on the broad canvas of epic conflict.

Mr. Barris has contributed to countless publications, done hosting stints on CBC, written and produced several documentaries, and retired after 18 years as a professor of print journalism at Centennial College, Toronto. His other books have tackled diverse topics including a look at the early days of steam navigation on prairie waterways, the Edmonton Oilers, rodeo cowboys, and old timers’ hockey. He continues to write “The Barris Beat”, a weekly column/web-blog for the Globe and Mail and the National Post.

Ted Barris has been recognized through numerous awards and accolades, the latest as a Member of the Order of Canada. He’s a celebrated speaker, presenting at 100-150 events each year. The Write Out Loud organizing committee is pleased to acknowledge support for Mr. Barris’ presentation from Swift Current Legion Branch 56 and from Griffin Genealogical Research Services.

Special date and location – 7:00 PM, Wednesday, July 19 – Due to the temporary closure of Swift Current’s Lyric Theatre, Mr. Barris will present at the Swift Current Museum. Admission is $8 but local veterans are welcome to attend free of charge and cadets for half price. Doors open at 6:30.
