Sun West Schools Do Well at Provincial Track

Over 100 student athletes from 15 Sun West schools were among the 1500 athletes from 241 schools who competed in the 2023 Provincial Track and Field Competition in Saskatoon on June 2-3. The Sun West schools with athletes competing included Beechy, Dinsmore Composite, Eaton School in Eatonia, Elrose Composite, Kenaston, Kyle Composite, Loreburn Central , Lucky Lake, North West Central School in Plenty, Davidson, Biggar Central, Outlook High, Kindersley Composite, Rosetown Central High, and Westcliffe Composite School in Marengo.

The athletes that competed in provincials had previously placed either first or second at districts and then at regionals. Thousands of students across Saskatchewan take part in Track and Field and all deserve recognition for their efforts. All Sun West athletes did very well with many reporting personal best performances and even some district records being broken.

All participating athletes receive points for where they place compared to all other athletes competing in the same event. Besides recognition for individual performances there is also recognition for school teams that have the largest points accumulated by all team members. Rosetown Central High School (RCHS) earned the gold medal in the 3A category (categories place schools of similar sizes together) with a point total of 206.5.

Eight Sun West athletes made it to the podium this year winning a total of 12 medals. Two athletes from Rosetown Central High School won gold medals! Dami Igbekoyi, in the Intermediate Boys category, won the gold medal in 100 metre hurdles as well as silver in the 100 metre dash and bronze in the 200 metre. Dami’s, fellow RCHS athlete, Taya Green won gold in the long jump in the Intermediate Girls category.

Sarah Leverton of Outlook High School (OHS) won a total of three medals in the Junior Girls category. These were silver in both the 100 and 200 metre dashes and a bronze in the long jump. Her fellow OHS athlete Brody Harris also won a bronze medal in the senior boys 400 metres.

Silver medals were also won by Brady Mann of Dinsmore Composite School in Senior Boys Discus and Addison Doell of Davidson in Intermediate Girls Javelin.

Athletes who also won bronze medals were Kash Meyers of Lucky Lake School in Junior Boys High Jump and Levi George of Kenaston School in Senior Boys Long Jump.

Sun West is proud of all its athletes who participated in provincials as well as all the earlier competitions and congratulations to the Sun West medal winners who showed that once again Sun West is a force to be reckoned with.
