Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to ask for an election on August 15th, with Election Day just five weeks later, on September 20th.
Trudeau may ask Gov. Gen. Mary Simon to dissolve the 43rd Parliament and draw up the 338 writs of election.
There has been mounting speculation Trudeau would force Canadians back to the polls to seek a majority mandate as the COVID-19 pandemic stretches on. If the campaign begins on Sunday, (with September. 20th as election day), the 2021 federal election would be 36 days in length, the shortest possible permitted under elections law.
First elected with a majority in 2015, voters reduced the Liberals to a minority in the 2019 federal election.
In recent months, Trudeau has spoken repeatedly about how in his mind Parliament has become “toxic” and unworkable due to opposition obstruction. In addition to this, both Trudeau and his officials have frequently accused the opposition parties of stalling or blocking legislation — hinting an election could be near.
