Small Business Week: Fresh
BDC Small Business Week is a national celebration of Canadian entrepreneurs and their contribution to Canada’s economy. The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has been organizing Small Business Week since 1979. It takes place every year during the third full week of October. We thought, what better way to celebrate then to chat with some of the wonderful small business owners from the area!
Why did you decide to start Fresh, in Eston?
There was a need for a well curated home, floral and gift shop within the community of Eston. I was currently unemployed and my cousin Rickie (whom I originally opened the shop with) was looking to relocate back to Eston and was interested in opening a shop together.
What are some of the perks and challenges for small business owners in today’s landscape?
I think a perk my business has witnessed in today’s landscape (especially though out this pandemic) is the support consumers have shown for smaller, independently owned businesses. Strong social media and online shopping presence have played a huge role in Fresh’s success the last few years. It has helped people near and far shop from my little business when they are not able to make it to Fresh in person.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone hoping to start their own business, what would it be?
Hard work will consume years of your life if you are lucky enough to create something successful. Those years, although hard, will be spent building and creating something you love and are proud of. Every. Single. Day.
