Marie Lackner Keeps Busy Sewing Quilts for Children in Ronald McDonald House

We are saddened to learn of the recent passing of Marie. We were immediately reminded of the wonderful opportunity we had in learning about her quilts that she lovingly shared with the children of Ronald McDonald House and wanted to re-share this article with you.

Original Article:
We were so touched to hear that Marie Lackner has donated 26 quilts to the children at Ronald McDonald House, that we wanted to share her story.

“I have always enjoyed sewing, so when I retired from teaching grade one at Westberry School I had time to return to my favorite pastime. I am a cancer survivor of many years so when I found out about Ronald McDonald House Charities, I thought what a great project it would be to make quilts and matching pillows for the children there. It means the world to me to be doing something special for them.

Ed and I take the finished quilts to the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon and the children there are always so happy to receive them. Sometimes, I’m not sure who is more thrilled, me or the children, but it makes me so very happy to put a smile on their face and to donate to this worthy cause. It is especially special for me that each child is able to choose and keep the quilt that makes them smile.

Making the quilts takes quite some time. If I do it on the machine, it is somewhat faster but I choose to do some by hand, which is a very relaxing activity especially during the winter months.

It is also always interesting looking for the right material, matching front and back. Flannel material is very soft and cozy and easy to work with, so flannel is my favorite—if I can find what I want!

A special thanks to Ed, who is very patient while I spend the time searching for the material I need, ” shared Marie.

“The musical instrument quilt was not a donated quilt. It is on my guest bed and took a long time to make but well worth it.”
