Severe weather in Queensland and Victoria, Australia, has resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals.
In Queensland, three men, aged 48, 59, and 69, perished when their boat capsized in Moreton Bay during a fishing trip. Additionally, a 59-year-old woman died in Gold Coast due to a falling tree, and the body of a 9-year-old girl was discovered in Brisbane after being swept away in a stormwater drain.
In Gympie, two women, aged 40 and 46, were found deceased in the Mary River, victims of being swept away in floodwaters. They were among three women swept into the flooded river through a stormwater drain on Tuesday. Another 46-year-old woman managed to save herself.
Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll blamed “extraordinarily difficult weather” for the tragedies.
“It has been a very tragic 24 hours due to the weather,” Carroll told reporters.
In regional Victoria, a woman and a man, both unidentified, were found dead at a campground in Buchan following flash flooding. In eastern Victoria, a 44-year-old man in Caringal died due to a falling tree branch on his property.
The storms and winds have also caused significant infrastructure damage, with over 1,000 power lines downed and 85,000 homes experiencing power outages in Queensland.
