Province Considering Legal Action Over Emergencies Act
Saskatchewan is the second province that has said it may take legal action.
The province is considering a legal challenge of the federal government’s decision to invoke the Emergencies Act to try to end blockades in Ottawa.
A spokeswoman for Premier Scott Moe has said in a statement that Saskatchewan has not ruled out legal recourse.
The Saskatchewan Party government says it is evaluating what effects the Emergencies Act could have in the province.
Moe has been opposed to the law, saying law enforcement is capable of clearing blockades and protests without the need for an act.
The House of Commons has approved the extraordinary and temporary measures, keeping them until at least mid-March. The act allows RCMP to enforce municipal bylaws, authorizes banks to freeze accounts and prohibits public assembly where it’s considered a breach of peace.
Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has announced his United Conservative government will file a court challenge of the federal government’s use of the Emergencies Act.
