Supported Independent Living, What is That?
One of the programs offered by West Central Abilities is the Supported Independent Living Program. This program provides individualised support to adults experiencing disability who live in their own home or who are working to transition from their family home or a group home into independent living.
Our goal is to provide the individuals we support with opportunities to enhance their quality of life, develop the skills and tools needed to learn and grow, to build their confidence and achieve as much independence as possible.
This program is person centered which means that the participant’s individual needs, interests, passions, likes, and dreams are the core focus of their program. Through this program we offer individual and group activities including Cooking Club, bowling, skating, money management classes, fun nights, Tell IT Like It Is relationship program, mental health awareness, swimming, arts and crafts attending community events and more.
We go into individuals’ homes to assist them with daily activities as needed including planning, shopping, and preparing meals, monthly and weekly budgets, home maintenance and care and more. Support Staff assist with increasing confidence, job skills, and social skills as needed. We recognize that every person is unique and requires different supports. We work with individuals and their support systems to develop a plan that works for them.
