St. Paul’s United Church Is Collecting Spare Change for Ukrainian Refugee Families
St. Paul’s United Church is collecting spare change for Ukrainian refugee families in partnership with the Polish Evangelical-Methodist Church in Elk, Poland.
“It all began when my wife, Dawn who watching the news from Ukraine, asked, “what we do?” She reminded me I have friends from the United-Methodist Church in Poland, pastors Monika and Dariusz Zuber, who are making a difference. Two parishes and their pastors took in two refugee families. One is housed in a vicarage in the village of Stare Juchy in Poland and the other in the spare bedroom in the pastors’ apartment, along with their own three children,” shared the Rev. Piotr.
Inspired by his conversation with Dawn, Rev. Piotr approached St. Paul’s Stewardship Team and then the Board; and the idea of a “spare change jar” became a reality. “Every Sunday there is a jar for donations at the back of the church. Every month the monies will be tallied up and sent directly to the pastors Dariusz and Monika, to use as they see fit,” he explained. “It all happens on the grassroots level and addresses basic needs. $100 buys modest groceries for a family for a week, $100 pays for a little girl’s meal plan in kindergarten for a month, some money buys a boy a soccer uniform thus enabling him to have a childhood, some money contributes to the polish language school for the refugees that one parish has started.”
To make it simple and most practical it is a “cash only” initiative. There are no tax receipts involved, and the church cannot process cheques. Individual, larger donations can be processed as an independent donation directly to the pastors in Poland. You can contact also contact Rev. Piotr for more details at therevpiotr@hotmail.com or 306-430-9000.
Both pastors are from the Evangelical-Methodist Church in Poland. She is one of the first, fully ordained women in Poland!
