Saturday’s Lotto 6/49 Could Be Biggest Win in History
The upcoming Saturday draw for Lotto 6/49 holds the potential to make history by awarding the largest-ever jackpot in the game’s 6/49 history. The Gold Ball jackpot currently sits at an impressive $66 million, surpassing any previous jackpot amount, both before and after the game’s format changes implemented in 2022.
In contrast, the classic jackpot remains fixed at $5 million. These changes to Lotto 6/49 occurred in September 2022, with the primary “Classic Draw” now guaranteeing a $5 million jackpot, where players can either select their numbers or opt for a quick pick. The $1 million guaranteed prize, however, has evolved into what is known as the Gold Ball Draw.
The Gold Ball Draw offers the assurance that a winner will receive either $1 million or a growing jackpot, which commences at $10 million and can soar to a staggering $68 million. In this draw, 29 white balls symbolize the guaranteed $1 million prize, while a single gold ball represents the escalating jackpot.
OLG spokesperson Tony Bitonti clarified, “If a white ball is drawn, the guaranteed $1 million prize is claimed. Subsequently, that ball is removed, leaving 28 white balls and one gold ball for the subsequent draw, and the jackpot increases by $2 million.” This process continues until the gold ball is eventually drawn.
As of now, only one white ball and one gold ball remain in play. If the gold ball is drawn this Saturday, one lucky individual will walk away with the impressive sum of $66 million. Should the gold ball evade selection on Saturday, and a $1 million prize is instead claimed, the gold ball jackpot will ascend to $68 million, guaranteeing someone a win on Wednesday, September 27.
Bitonti expressed, “We have never been able to say that before – so this will be historic for this lottery game. With Lotto Max, which has the $70 million jackpot cap, we can’t predict when the jackpot will be won, but with 6/49, we can ensure that someone will win the jackpot if we reach $68 million.”
Previously, the record for a Lotto 6/49 gold ball jackpot stood at $64 million. Earlier this year, a ticket purchased in New Brunswick secured this prize. Prior to the 2022 changes, a $64 million 6/49 jackpot was won by a woman from Mississauga, Ontario, on October 17, 2015.
