At least 15 Killed in Tragic Highway Crash in Manitoba

A tragic incident occurred in Manitoba, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 individuals. The casualties occurred when a semi-trailer truck collided with a small bus, predominantly carrying elderly passengers. This accident stands as one of the most fatal road incidents witnessed in recent Canadian history.

The crash took place at the intersection of two major roads near Carberry, a town located in southwestern Manitoba, approximately 170 km (105 miles) west of Winnipeg. It was reported the individuals on the bus were en route to a casino in Carberry.

Assistant Commissioner Rob Hill, who oversees the Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police, confirmed the devastating news in a televised press conference. He stated, “We’ve been able to establish that at least 15 people have been confirmed deceased as a result of this collision.” Hill further expressed the profound sorrow and tragedy that this day represented for Manitoba and the entire country.

The bus had been transporting approximately 25 passengers, the majority of whom were elderly individuals, according to Hill. Ten other people were receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. The police refrained from disclosing the identities of the drivers and any potential responsibilities regarding the crash.

Initially, media reports mistakenly identified the vehicle involved as a van instead of a bus. It was later clarified that the vehicle belonged to Handi-Transit, a transportation service catering to the elderly and individuals with disabilities.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences via Twitter, extending sympathy to those who lost loved ones and sending thoughts to the injured. Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson also took to Twitter, sharing her heartfelt response to the tragic accident near Carberry.
