Obituaries: Kenneth ‘Ken’ Richard Gerling

1942 ~ 2022 (age 80)

Kenneth Richard Gerling was the only child born to John and Julia (nee Wienkauf) Gerling on April 10th, 1942, in Macklin, Saskatchewan. His early years of education were in Macklin, where he graduated from Grade 12. His first job out of school was on a construction crew building the Macklin Hospital. He then moved to Meadow Lake as a Grain Buyer with Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, only to move on as a Repair Foreman with Pioneer Grain. He stayed with Pioneer in this capacity until his retirement after 28 years, when he then moved to work at the Macklin lumber yard until his final retirement.

Ken married the love of his life, Ruth Cameron, on September 17, 1966, in Macklin, SK. They lived in Primate, Macklin, and Salvador, raising five children together. In 1980, Ken and Ruth purchased an acreage in Salvador where they had horses, pigs, cows, and chickens and he even became the Mayor for 6 years!

Over the years, Ken loved playing all sorts of sports, including disking, but mostly fastball. He also enjoyed watching his kids while they played their many sports. His family was precious to him, and with that there would be many family fishing trips or vacations to places such as Calaway Park, AB, Cypress Hills, SK, Billings, MT, Reno, NV, Topeka, KS, and Yellowstone National Park. Above all he had a love of horses. Ken would either be riding them, hooking up the sleigh to pull the kids, displaying his team at local parades, or be chariot racing. You would also find Ken enjoying a good rodeo, chuckwagon races, or simply playing cards with family and friends. Ken was a very quiet, kind, and caring person, and we will all miss his gentle soul.

Ken is survived by his beloved wife of over 55 years, Ruth Gerling (nee Cameron), and his precious children: Randy (Linda Slade) Gerling, Trent Gerling, Carmen (Tony) Hodges, Charmaine (Mike) Reiber, and Dwight Gerling. Also left to carry on his legacy are his grandchildren: Michael Hodges, Kale Hodges, Austin Reiber, Kamryn Reiber, Rosalie Gerling, and Dawsson Gerling. Ken had been predeceased by his parents, John and Julia Gerling, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, John and Florence Cameron.

There will be a Celebration of Ken’s life held at the Family Farm in Salvador on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join and share fond memories of Ken. Interment of Ken’s ashes, during a private family service, will take place on July 3 at the Luseland Cemetery with Shauna Meek as officiant.

Donations in Ken’s memory may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
