Test Your Livestock Water This Summer

By Catherine Lang, Livestock and Feed Extension Specialist, Moose Jaw, SK

The Ministry of Agriculture’s livestock and feed extension specialists are working to make water testing more accessible to livestock producers in Saskatchewan. Submit your livestock water samples for testing, free of charge, at the locations listed below within the indicated drop-off periods. Your regional specialist will then contact you with your results. You can also submit samples anytime at your local Ministry of Agriculture regional services office or at participating Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation offices. If you are unable to attend during the drop-off times you may leave your samples at the location site 24 hours before the scheduled time.

When collecting a sample from a water source, it should be collected at the point where livestock directly drink. One litre of water is required for each sample and should be collected in a clean container, provided it can be reliably sealed, easily labelled and not at risk of breaking or leaking during transport. Each participating office also has sample bottles available.

The Ministry of Agriculture provides screening for livestock water samples at regional offices. When screening shows a potential problem, samples may be sent to the Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory for further analysis; there will be no charge, provided the water is for livestock use and the livestock producer has a registered Premises Identification (PID) number in Saskatchewan. Visit our PID page to register for PID.
