Overdose Outreach Teams Extended in Saskatoon and Regina

The overdose outreach pilot program in Regina and Saskatoon will be extended for an additional six months.

Initiated in December 2022 as part of the Saskatchewan Drug Task Force initiative, the program aims to mitigate the risks of overdose and other drug-related harms for individuals. According to an official statement from the province, the outreach teams consist of a mental health and addictions counselor from the Saskatchewan Health Authority and a primary care paramedic from Regina Fire.

Mental Health and Addictions Minister Everett Hindley expressed his satisfaction with the Overdose Outreach Teams (OOT), highlighting the positive impact they have had on building relationships with residents struggling with addiction. The minister shared his anticipation for further success stories and increased access to support services.

Since its inception, the outreach teams have already provided assistance to over 60 people, connecting them with vital mental health and addictions services, housing options, medical interventions, and financial aid. Saskatoon Fire Chief Morgan Hackl emphasized the widespread nature of overdoses in the city and praised the client-centered care and effectiveness of the OOT in facilitating crucial connections to support systems.

The province clarifies that anyone can refer individuals to the outreach team services. Once the pilot program concludes, a comprehensive review will be conducted to determine the next steps for the initiative.
