What Local Curlers Can Expect This Year

With curling season just around the corner, we caught up with Colleen Oscar-Swan, President of the Kindersley Curling Club, to discuss what curlers can expect this upcoming season.

Can you tell us a little bit about how this year’s curling will be different from previous years?

The biggest change this year, is that we will be back to the regular rules of curling. We can once again can sweep using two sweepers and skips can sweep in the house. However, another difference will be, that all curlers or visitors to the curling will require proof of vaccination or an approved negative COVID test. One change that we hope everyone notices in our building is the upgrades that have happened over the past two years. Together with the Town of Kindersley our club has been completely repainted, all new flooring and all lights upgraded both inside our lobby, lounge and on our ice surface. A big thank you to the Town of Kindersley for their financial help with this

Last year you had to shut down early due to COVID. How did this affect the club?

Last year we got shut down into our 4th week of curling. The shutdown was a huge concern for our board. First because of the long term effect it may have on our membership this year and second the financial hit. With the gracious help of the town, receiving as many grants as we could get, the generous support of members that donated their membership fees back to the club and to all of our major IN-ICE and SCORE BOARD sponsors we have come out of this in good shape. On behalf of the board of directors, we thank everyone so much for their kindness and generosity, we certainly recognize that this time has been financial tough on everyone.

What safety measures are you including this year?

Proof of Vaccination or a COVID approved negative test. We will continue with our extra cleaning and sanitizing of the building. Hand Sanitizer will be available at all entrances and in our lounge. and of course enforcing the the Gov. mask mandate.

What things can players look forward to this year?

We have leagues for all level of curlers, right from just learning to those that have been playing for years. It is a great sport to meet new people, have lots of fun, bit of competition, laughs and get some exercise. If all goes well with the installation of our ice, we are offering a free curling from Nov. 2-4th. This is a great time for people that are new to the game to come have a few lessons before the leagues start. If you have curled before, but maybe have not played for a few years, this will be a great time to shake the rust off. We look forward and hope to see many new members out to try the game of curling and to see our former members our for another season.
