Klippers Weekend Recap

By Kevin Martin

The Kindersley Klippers home opener against the Battleford Northstars at the West Central Events Centre on Friday, September 16th was a thriller! The stands were very full of approximately 400 noisy and boisterous Klippers fans.

I had a quick chat with assistant coach Briar McNaney before the game and I asked him if he gets nervous before these kinds of games. He answered “No, I don’t get nervous. What I get is a feeling of excitement and anticipation of the game”. Fair enough.

I had a quick question for assistant Tyler Traptow also. I had noticed that he wasn’t wearing a tie as most assistants and players do. His answer was that it only lasted for 1 game. Even when he was a player here, he was known for not wearing a tie! I just couldn’t resist pointing that out. Sorry Trapper!

Both teams got off to a quick start as these division rivals know all too well the importance of these games and each wants to dominate the other. The Northstars scored first and unfortunately last as they downed our guys by a score of 4 to 3. They outshot the opposition by a margin of 40 to 38 as they peppered the Battleford goalie all night but he weathered the storm and gave his team the chance they needed to take us down. Both teams played hard for 3 periods, however there can only be 1 winner.

Game # 2 was the next night in Battleford and unfortunately we came on the wrong end of a 5 to 1 score. The next home game is Tuesday, September 20th at the WCEC with the Norte Dame Hounds providing the opposition.
