Over 1.5M Dry Shampoo Products Recalled in Canada Over Cancer-Causing Chemical Benzene

On Tuesday, October 18, 2022, Health Canada issued a mass recall on Unilever hair products containing the cancer-causing chemical benzene.

The for more than 1.5 million listed products were dry shampoos sold between January 2020 and October 2022 by Unilever brands Bed Head TIGI, Dove and Tresemmé.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and dispose of it in accordance with the instructions for disposal on the packaging,” Health Canada said.

Unilever shared via their release that benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life threatening.

The recall is not only limited to Canada. In the United States, dry shampoo products by Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé have also been recalled.
