Back on the Chopping Block
On October 13, we hosted another Chopped Challenge. Each house picked up their box of mystery ingredients at 8:45 am and had until noon to whip up a delicious meal for themselves and our judges. This round’s mystery ingredients were chicken wings, root beer, potatoes, apples, and cabbage. Houses must use all the ingredients but can add other items they have on hand.
Group Home 1 presented the judges with garlic root beer glazed chicken wings with a garnish of green onion and sesame seed, apple, and cabbage slaw and a twice baked stuffed potato. They also made a toasted coconut root beer float. Their dish was presented beautifully with some artistic flair, winning them the Most Beautiful Presentation award. The judges really enjoyed the stuffed baked potato and were surprized by the combination of root beer and coconut in the float but thought it was delicious!!
Group Home 2 made Killer root beer adobo chicken wings, special fried cabbage and potatoes and an apple peanut butter smoothie. They received the Most Creative Use of Apple award. The judges thought the wings were tasty, but with more time or more sauce would have been even better. They also noted that while the flavour of the smoothie was great, there was a strange texture from the apples. Very creative but it didn’t all come together in the end.
The Group Home 3 team were once again the winners, serving up a Pub Crawl Platter which included root beer BBQ chicken wings, home cut fries, pork spring rolls with root beer garlic dipping sauce, and classic veggies with dill dip. To finish off the meal they offered up a root beer apple pie which was the star of the day! The judges were impressed with the number of items offered and the creative ways each mystery ingredient was used. The wings were full of flavour and the pie was unique and delicious! In addition to winning the trophy, they also received the award for best wings.
Congratulations to Helen, Greg, Liam and Trevor and their support staff on their win! Also, we would like to thank everyone who participated in our most recent challenge including the individuals and staff at the houses and our three judges Chris Baker, Justin Overand and Leanne Boychuk. The judges never know what they are going to get to taste until it arrives in front of them!
