Local Artist Anna Polsfut Talks About Her Love for All Things Art

Currently, local artist Anna Polsfut has an exhibit at the Kerrobert Courtroom Gallery. Titled “Art&Soul” the exhibit is a multimedia collection of photography, relief printmaking, drawing, and silkscreen printing.

So, with that said, we thought it would be fun to catch up with Anna, and discover a little more about what inspires her to create art!

For those who may not know you, can you tell us a little about yourself?

For those who don’t know me, I’m Anna Polsfut. I was born and raised here in Kindersley and went to Medicine Hat College for my post secondary education. There I earned an Associate of Arts & Science as well as a Bachelor of Applied Arts. My full time gig is at the Town of Kindersley as the Communications Coordinator. My side project is Chosen Studio, my art and design company that I have been building up since 2018. My mediums include fine arts (relief printmaking, silkscreen printmaking, painting, drawing), as well as graphic design and photography. In my free time I can be found at the yoga studio, curling rink, lake, or out volunteering within the community for various organizations.

Where did you get your love of art from?

My love of art has always been a part of me, whether it was dance lessons, piano lessons, playing in the school band, or drawing classes.

Who is your favorite artist?

There are so many amazing artists out there to choose from, however, my favourite artists include 3 of my instructors in my Visual Communications course. They all took the time to help us out when they definitely did not have to, whether it was late nights, over lunch hours, or breaks, they made sure we didn’t have to learn alone. Yulin Wang was my drawing instructor, Koi Neng Liew who we called “Liew” was my sculpture instructor, and Mato Higashitani was my serigraphy (silkscreen) instructor. They each taught me a different lesson. Yulin taught me patience and practice makes perfect. Liew taught me not to be so serious all the time, his most frequent phrase was “don’t have a plaster disaster!”. Mato taught me about dedication and discipline, if you want it, you have to go get it, no one else can do that for you. As students we were lucky enough to not only learn from these amazing individuals, but to be surrounded by their work as well in class for project examples or attending Faculty Shows.

What is your favorite art form?

My favourite medium to work with is relief printmaking. I find carving the blocks relaxing and challenging. I like how each print is unique because of the way the ink sits on the block each time you press it. The final products are always very striking. You can use coloured ink, however I prefer to use black ink on fresh white paper, the contrast is noticeable from a distance.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by the world around me, whether it be the beauty of the Saskatchewan skies, my friends and family, or a place I’ve recently travelled to.

What are you currently working on at the moment?

I am currently working on a new series of relief prints inspired by photos I have recently taken. After a break from creating pieces to frame them and prepare for my show in the Kerrobert Courthouse Gallery, I am excited to get back into it!
