Kindersley Fire Receives Quilt Donation

Kindersley Fire extended their thanks today after receiving a donation from the nonprofit organization C4K=Cloth for Kids Inc.

After the family of the late Veronica Longmuir (owner of Veronica’s Sewing Supplies) donated over a trailer’s worth of cloth to the charity, the group felt it was only fitting to return the fabric back to Kindersley, in memory of her.

“It’s all thanks to Veronica’s shop and her family that we received all the cloth and we were able to make the quilts that were delivered today, said Edna Poncelet, a member of C4K. “It’s giving back to Veronica really. It’s a tribute to her.”

Once the quilts were sewn, Poncelet then contacted Fire Chief Ron Hope, who was more than happy to receive the call and accept the quilts. These quilts will help keep children and families warm during incidents such as motor vehicle crashes or fires.

C4K is a Canadian charity where volunteers use donated fabric to sew and deliver new clothes free of charge to areas where there is the greatest need throughout Saskatchewan.

The charity was started by Edna Poncelet after she visited a conference and got the idea from speaking with other sewing store business owners. In spring 2002 Edna placed an advert in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix calling for fabric and notion donations and volunteer sewers. Edna and three volunteers started with their first agency request from the Elizabeth Fry Society for 150 gift bags.

Their team of now 20 to 25 sewers and volunteers meet weekly in the St. Thomas Wesley Church (Basement) in Saskatoon to cut and sew items for children. An additional 20 plus members sew from home. C4K provides their sewn items free of charge in areas where there is the greatest need.

In 2008 C4K gained Canadian charitable status.

If you would like to make a donation, the group is currently looking for:

• Cutting rotary blades (60 mm size)
• Thread (serger & sewing machine)
• Baby flannelette
• Unused fabric
• Knitting yarn
