UPDATE: SaskTel Bringing in Email Subscription Fee
UPDATE: SaskTel retracts decision to implement subscription fee. Read about it here.
With SaskTel reporting a net income of $104.4 million and operating revenues of $1.3 billion in the 2021-2022 fiscal year, is charging customers a $1.95 per month starting in April, to have a Sasktel dot net email addresses worth it?
Many have taken to social media to voice their complaints, saying that with the cost of living rising, this, albeit small, is yet another cost that the customer has to shoulder.
With an email address being mandatory to access an online account or subscription service, switching over things like Netflix, Amazon and dozens of other business or investment accounts will be a laborious process.
Sasktel issued this statement on their website on January 19:
“Effective January 19, 2022, sasktel.net email addresses are no longer available for new SaskTel customers.
The industry has changed since SaskTel introduced free email many years ago, and the cost to provide free email service is no longer justified. There are other good options for free email service, such as Gmail and Outlook.”
The change will be effective April 21, and will apply to all sasktel.net email address users.
