Congratulations to Simeon Bakanec!
A huge round of congratulations is in order for Simeon Bakanec, a young local skater who recently won gold in the 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games!
Running from February 19th-25, these multi-sport games marked the program’s 50th anniversary and featured upwards of 1,400 participants from every corner of the province who competed in 16 sports and represented nine provincial districts. Not only was it an action-packed and historic week of sport and culture, but also one of camaraderie and community, which made it a memorable one for Simeon. “The closing ceremonies stood out for me. There were songs, awards, some neat performances and an elder from the First Nations tribe,” he shared.
14-year-old Simeon who is coached by Neil Tymoruski and Amber Wildman has been skating for six years. While at the Games, he competed in the Juvenile Free Skate where a score of 23.04 secured him the gold! But when asked what his favorite part of the games was, he shared it was meeting new people and making a lot of new friends.
In addition, Simeon also had time to take in some of the other sports. “I watched the gold, bronze and silver wrestling matches on the final day.”
Congratulations, Simeon, thank you for representing our province!
The next edition of the Saskatchewan Games will take place from July 21-27, 2024 in Lloydminster where more than 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials will take part.
