Prepare for a significant and unwelcome drop in temperatures as a cold front sweeps across the Prairies, returning conditions to a more typical November setting.
Following the passage of the front, the double-digit temperatures experienced in recent days will give way to subfreezing conditions, persisting for a week or longer in many communities. The intrusion of Arctic air will result in wind chill values dropping into the minus teens for numerous locations.
As temperatures plummet, the risk of snow, particularly in Alberta’s southern foothills, becomes apparent, potentially leading to challenging travel conditions by Wednesday afternoon.
Snowfall is expected to initiate in the Yellowhead region, encompassing Hinton and Edson, early Wednesday morning. The front will progress southward, bringing snow to the foothills during the morning hours. Flurries will extend along the QE2, south of Edmonton through Red Deer, and eventually reach Calgary in the afternoon.
This front may induce brief periods of heavy snow, reducing visibility for drivers. Calgary, in particular, is expected to experience these conditions during the afternoon and into the evening commute, posing potential travel hazards.
Continuing southward, the front will trigger northerly winds, resulting in upslope snow. This snowfall will persist Wednesday night and into Thursday morning for the southern foothills and the Rockies.
Overall, a forecast of 5-10 cm of snow is anticipated, with some of the hardest-hit areas expecting up to 15 cm through Thursday.
In contrast, the snow drought persists for Edmonton and its surrounding areas. It appears they may conclude the month without measurable snow on the ground at any point during November.
Looking ahead, minimal snow is expected for much of Alberta and Saskatchewan through the end of November, although some parts of the region experienced significant snow earlier in the month, most of which has since melted.
