Budding Entrepreneur Rylen Ginther Creates SubZero Candy
After spotting a new kind of candy currently being sold by Rylen Ginther at The Craft Hand, how could we not contact him for an interview?! And what a great budding entrepreneur he is—knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his product—the perfect combination for success!
–Could you tell us a little about yourself?
I would love to tell you about myself! My name is Rylen Ginther, I’m 13-years-old, in Grade 7 and am from Kindersley, Sask. I play Hockey and Golf and love Hunting and Fishing.
-Why did you choose to create freeze dried candy? Where did the idea come from?
My Mom sells Moon Munchies (a freeze-dried candy company) in her store (The Crafted Hand) and I loved them as well as a lot of others, so we started talking about buying one for ourselves. My dad helped with purchasing the machine and I planned to do the work. I load the candy trays, fill the bags, weigh each bag and sticker them. I thought of the name SubZero Candy because it has to do with freezing. We bought a sticker machine, bags and the experimenting went from there! And now they are for sale at my mom’s store. So Moon Munchies inspired me!
-How do you make freeze-dried candy? Where do you go to do this (can you do this at home or do you go to a special business to create this?)
To make freeze-dried candy, you need the freeze dryer machine. It takes the moisture out of any food, it can make the food/candy puff up or stay the same but it gets a different texture. Some candy can take 2hrs to make and some up to 30 hrs! It is a lot of trial and error and we have had some pretty big messes to clean up! Some people do make it from home but you need a special plug to run the machine and a lot of room for the machine and supplies.
–What is your favorite kind of candy?
My favourite is the Jolly Rancher Puffs, they just melt in your mouth and are so flavourful.
-What are your plans for SubZero Candy—do you plan to expand? Sell more flavors? Or try something different?
I plan to try lots of different types of candies and chocolate bars to see what works and what doesn’t, then try ice cream and fruit next! I plan to go in a few markets this summer, that I’m starting to stock up for and am excited for.
Thank you for the interview!
