Fire Chief Jeff Soveran Shares Thoughts on Weekend Courses
Over the weekend of May 26, the Kindersley Fire Department was incredibly busy hosting an NFPA 1001 written and practical, NFPA 1072 practical test, and 1072 Hazardous Materials
Operations and Awareness certifications.
Firefighters from Kindersley, Yorkton, and Regina attended, 17 in Total—13 were from Kindersley, and though it was a gruelling weekend, the rewards were high for our department.
The NFPA 1001 and 1072 courses help further our member’s knowledge which will better serve them when arriving at a fire or another emergency. “We serve a 4000 sq km MVC area, along with a 3500 Sq Km Fire Area—training is essential to do the job we do,” shared Fire Chief Jeff Soveran.
The NFPA 1001 is the standard for fire fighter professional qualifications. This standard identifies the minimum job performance requirements (JPRs) for Career and Professional Fire Fighters.
The NFPA 1072 identifies the minimum job performance requirements (JPRs) for personnel at the scene of a hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction (WMD) incident, including the following levels: awareness, operations, operations mission-specific, hazardous materials technician, and incident commander.
Among those in attendance was Captain Landon Adams, Emergency Response Team, Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency who shared this about our members.
“Your firefighters did very well, especially when it came to the practical, you have a very competent department.
Thanks for having us and being accommodating. You have a great group of people who are invested in serving your community.”
When asked his thoughts regarding the weekend and how the members faired, Fire Chief Jeff Soveran shared this. “I’m so proud of the members of our department, and the work they put in this weekend. But, I’m also not surprised — they put this work in year-round for our community and surrounding areas, and I want the community to know and be assured if they have an emergency, they will get some of the best-trained personnel in the province.
I’d also like to recognize their immediate families, as they are as much a part of our team as its members. They see the importance of supporting our members in their dreams of becoming professional firefighters, and without that support, we wouldn’t be the strong, cohesive department that we are. But, our training doesn’t stop here, it continues for new members and current members throughout their careers.”
I would also like to acknowledge the support of the Town of Kindersley and the RM290 we would not be where we are today without it.”
