Turkey to Search for Oil and Gas off Somalia Coast
Turkey plans to send an exploration vessel off the coast of Somalia later this year to search for oil and gas as part of a hydrocarbon cooperation deal between the two countries, the Turkish energy ministry announced on Thursday.
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar shared that they will dispatch their Oruc Reis vessel at the end of September or early October to Somalia. It will conduct a significant seismic study there, which could last for months.
Bayraktar explained that two of the three blocks are approximately 50 kilometers off the Somali coast, with the third located about 100 kilometers away. He shared they believe Somalia has substantial offshore oil and natural gas resources. That they have signed an offshore deal for three blocks, granting Turkey exclusive rights for exploration and production if oil is discovered in these areas.
In March, Turkey signed an offshore oil and natural gas cooperation deal with Somalia, further strengthening bilateral ties following a defense agreement the previous month, the Turkish Energy Ministry stated.
