Filipino Festival Sees Great Turn Out

The 1st ever Kindersley Filipino Food and Music Street Festival got underway on Saturday, July 20th and continued until the end of the day Sunday, the 21st. This event was well supported by many Kindersley residents who came out to sample some of the sumptuous Philippine cuisine! There were food vendors outside along with a food truck from Saskatoon.

The Kindersley Philippine community boasts a large number, especially if you include towns like
Eatonia, Eston and other surrounding towns plus Saskatoon. First off starting at 11:00 am was a small parade of children and young adults in traditional costumes who walked around the parking lot and after that, everyone got settled in the main auditorium at the Norman Ritchie Centre to hear various speakers.
The events Emcee, Razel Martinez, did a great job. Both the Canadian and Philippine anthems were sung and then Mayor Rod Perkins spoke about the valuable contributions the Filipino community has made to Kindersley and was happy they are here and being successful.

Without them, many communities would be in big trouble. Filipino Community Association President, Nick Divina also spoke and both received a generous round of applause. Kevin from the Chamber of Commerce also brought greetings from the Chamber and spoke about what the Chamber does and how we can help people get into a business to the newest residents and helped to distribute welcome bags to them.

It was a day of busy and heat! The sky was overcast from smoke but the spirits were high as many people came out to support this awesome event. Judging by the numbers of people and the happy food vendors, this is an event that will likely continue annually for years to come. Sunday started off with a Zumba class and there were other activities scheduled for the day.The food vendors were set up early to accommodate the hungry throng of food enthusiasts. The heat and mosquitos have been relentless but the heart and spirit of the Filipino people shines brightly. A big thank you to everyone involved in hosting this wildly successful 2 days!
