Virtual Physician Program Enhancing Outlook Emergency Room Services
The SHA has announced that residents in Outlook and area will continue to benefit from uninterrupted access to emergency department services thanks to the virtual physician program.
The virtual physician program is a temporary measure that helps sustain and support access to emergency health services while the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) continues work to stabilize health human resources, particularly in rural and remote communities. Recruitment and retention of health-care professionals remains a top priority for the SHA and the Government of Saskatchewan.
Using the existing technology of HealthLine 811, the virtual physician program provides nursing staff with remote access to a physician. This virtual network helps staff address emergent medical needs of patients coming to the emergency room (ER) at the Outlook and District Health Centre when local physicians are unavailable. All patients are assessed, triaged and receive treatment based on their care needs.
To date, the program has enhanced access to emergency health services for residents in Biggar, Broadview, Davidson, Gravelbourg, Herbert, Kipling, Oxbow and Porcupine Plain.
Individuals requiring emergency services should call 9-1-1. Non-urgent health-related questions may be directed to the 24/7 HealthLine service by calling 8-1-1.
